Mr. Sweetman

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) using the year 1948 and (b) using the year 1953 as base 100, the index of the terms of trade for each quarter since 1948, and for January and February, 1957, if figures for the first quarter of 1957 are not available.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing to the bases specified in the Deputy's question quarterly index numbers of the terms of trade (defined as the ratio of the domestic export price index to the import price index) in the years 1948-56. No similar figures are yet available for any period in 1957. These figures will be furnished to the Deputy as soon as they are available.

Following is the statement:—
