Vol. 161 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Attendants' Sick Pay.

asked the Minister for Health whether a permanent hospital attendant with two and a half years' service is entitled to sick pay, and, if so, for what length of time.

I presume the Deputy's question relates to hospital attendants employed by local authorities.

The Local Government (Officers) Regulations, 1943, provide that:—

"...the Manager may grant sick leave to an officer who is incapable of performing his duties owing to illness or physical injury if and only if the Manager is satisfied that there is a reasonable expectation that such officer will be able to resume the performance of his duties."

The normal sick leave granted by local authorities to permanent officers is six months on full pay and six months on half pay except in the case of officers who are suffering from T.B. when the sick leave granted is normally six months' full pay, six months on three-quarters pay and six months on half pay. The grant of sick leave with pay to officers other than those suffering from T.B. is subject to the limitation that no salary shall be paid to an officer when the sick leave granted to such officer during any continuous period of four years exceeds, in the aggregate, 365 days.
