Vol. 162 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Care of Emigrants.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, in view of the continued increasing rate of emigration, he will arrange for the establishment of consulates or advisory care and assistance bureaux on a modest scale in English provincial centres such as Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Huddersfield, and in other large emigrant centres.

I have gone very carefully into the subject matter of the Deputy's question and I regret to say it would be impracticable to set up care and assistance bureaux in all the centres in Great Britain in which there are substantial numbers of Irish emigrants or migrants. In such centres the problems, which the Deputy, I have no doubt, has in mind, can best be met by the establishment of clubs by the Irish themselves as has been done already in some areas in Great Britain.
