Vol. 162 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Vocational Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he has received proposals from the County Galway Vocational Education Committee for the provision of vocational schools for (1) Carna, and (2) the Cloughbrack-Clonbur-Cornamona area; and when sanction will be given to the committee to prepare plans and invite tenders for the erection of these schools in the Fíor-Ghaeltacht.

My Department has received a proposal from the County Galway Vocational Education Committee to provide a vocational school at Carna. Cornamona is one of the centres mentioned in a development scheme drawn up some time ago by the committee, but no specific proposals for the provision of a school in that district have yet been made.

The position is that the vocational education committee was advised in November, 1956, that the money then available for vocational school building had been fully earmarked up to the end of the financial year 1957-58 for projects already completed or then being built or for which tenders had then been accepted, and that further projects could not be approved for the time being. I cannot say what projects it may be possible to authorise in the financial year 1958-59, but the position in County Galway will be considered when projects for that year are being determined.
