Vol. 162 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Cows.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that large numbers of cows, that have failed to pass the tuberculosis test in England, Scotland and the Six Counties, are purchased cheaply in those areas, imported into this country, and sold at local fairs, and, if so, what immediate action he proposes to take to stop this practice.

Mr. Moylan

As the importation of cattle from Britain is prohibited except under stringent conditions, and then only in the case of registered pedigree animals required for special breeding purposes, the sale in this country of cows that fail to pass tuberculin tests in Britain does not arise.

As regards the position in relation to the Six Counties, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question on the 29th May.
