Vol. 162 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bakers' Flour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the price of bakers' flour has been further increased by 4/6 per sack and shop flour by 1/3 per sack; and what is the justification for this further increase in the price of flour.

The prices charged by flour-millers are not now controlled and I understand that flour prices very in different areas.

I am informed that the first price lists issued by millers following the removal of subsidy were described as provisional so that it is not altogether correct to refer to a further increase of price.

While flour prices are no longer subject to control, I am having the movement of prices watched, and would welcome any information available to the Deputy which might suggest that the prices being charged in any area are excessive having regard to the general level prevailing throughout the country.

Any information at my disposal has been furnished in the text of the question I addressed to the Minister. If there is a further increase, will the Minister consider it his duty to take any steps? Is the Minister aware that 4/6 per sack increase represents a farthing on the 2 lb. loaf?

4/6 per sack on flour represents as much as a farthing on the 2 lb. loaf. Does he not think that is a matter deserving of some attention?

I have no information that an increase of that dimension has taken place and I should like to get any information the Deputy may have.

I here and now confirm that the price of flour delivered at Ballaghaderreen is 4/6 higher than it was on the first price list issued. I understand that in other places the price has fluctuated with an increase of between 3/6 and 4/6.

I certainly will have that position examined, but it will be appreciated that the position is still somewhat experimental. I should not like to take a decision as to the future arrangements until we see precisely how it works out.
