Written Answers. - Acquisition and Allotment of Land.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) the area taken over to date by the Land Commission under the Land Act, 1923, and the number of allottees, (b) the number of new holdings created, and the area involved, and (c) the number of enlargements, and the area involved.

Up to 31st March, 1957, the latest date for which final figures are available, the total area of land acquired by the Land Commission under the Land Acts, 1923-54, was 1,248,024 acres including lands acquired through migration or by recovery of holdings for default and lands taken over from owners on provisional lettings. The total area distributed amongst 72,299 allottees is 1,128,963 acres of which 522,617 acres were utilised to enlarge 43,675 uneconomic holdings, and the balance, 606,346 acres, provided 28,624 new holdings or plots for ex-employees, evicted tenants, migrants and other persons or bodies.
