Vol. 165 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Revenue Commissioners.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the approximate cost of (a) the Customs and Excise side, and (b) the Inland Revenue side, of the Revenue Commissioners for the last available year, the amount collected by each side during that year, and the percentage cost of such collection to the amount so collected.

Estimated figures are available for the year 1956-57.

It is estimated that in that year the approximate cost of (a) the Customs and Excise side and (b) the Inland Revenue side of the Vote for the Office of the Revenue Commissioners was £1,062,000 and £873,000 respectively. For the purpose of estimating the total cost of collection, however, it is necessary to add to these amounts the estimated cost of the services rendered to the Office of the Revenue Commissioners by other Departments and to make allowance for services performed by the Revenue Commissioners on behalf of other Departments. These adjustments bring the estimated cost of collection to £1,303,000 on the Customs and Excise side and £1,083,000 on the Inland Revenue side.

The net revenue receipts for the year were £62,556,000 for Customs and Excise and £31,538,000 for Inland Revenue, and the percentage cost of collection is accordingly estimated at 2.08 and 3.43 respectively.
