Vol. 165 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Flood Problem.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate what steps, if any, have been taken to implement the recommendations made by Mr. L.E. Rydell regarding the solution of the River Shannon flood problem.

As the Deputy is, no doubt, aware Mr. Rydell stated in his report that he had found no simple or obvious solution of the River Shannon flood problem. He recommended that a preliminary engineering investigation should be undertaken of the possibility of additional lake storage, river diversions and channel improvements. The Government approved in principle of this recommendation and the investigation is at present being carried out jointly by the Commissioners of Public Works and the E.S.B.

Will the Minister say when it is hoped to have that report on those investigations?

I could not answer that question. I think they have not even found themselves in a position to make an estimate of the date.

Can the Minister state the date on which they commenced these investigations?

The Government decision was taken shortly after we assumed office.

Is the Minister not aware that the investigation commenced when I was Minister for Finance? I remember giving instructions to the Board of Works to start them. I think, if the Minister looks again, he will find that. They have had two years to do it.
