Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ordnance Survey Maps.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the Ordnance Survey maps on sale are printed on inferior quality paper, and lack up-to-date details, and, if so, whether he will take steps to remedy the position.

I understand that, apart from large-scale maps subject to frequent use, the paper in Ordnance Survey maps is generally satisfactory. This year, a new specification for mapping paper has been evolved which is expected to meet all reasonable requirements.

Reasonably up-to-date detail is provided on small-scale maps, new editions of which have been or are about to be, issued. The detail on large-scale maps is somewhat out-of-date, but any substantial increase in the rate of revision of this detail would involve heavy additional expenditure which would not be warranted in the circumstances.

New surveying and map-reproduction techniques are being adopted with a view to increasing the output of more up-to-date maps.

In view of the fact that these maps are of great importance at the moment and that tourist bodies in this country are recommending customers to purchase maps in London, and in view of his statement as to the cost of these maps, would it not be better that the Minister would divert funds from other sources in order that proper maps may be made?

These other things might be necessary, too.
