Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of Civil Servants.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of civil servants recruited to each grade since 8th May, 1957, to the latest available date, together with similar data for 1956.

The particulars asked for by the Deputy have now been collated. As this is the second time in three months that questions of this type have been addressed to me, I think it well to sound a note of warning against drawing any inferences as to the growth or contraction of the Civil Service from comparative recruitment figures over selected periods. Such figures are largely governed by the incidence of vacancies before or during the periods chosen and by the time taken to fill vacancies. These variable factors affect figures produced in relation to any particular point of time so materially that comparisons can be altogether misleading.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—
