Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Trawlers.

asked the Minister for Lands whether with reference to his statement at a function in Dún Laoghaire, regarding the provision of middle water trawlers, that no decision had yet been reached as to whether the trawlers would be bought, he will state the type of trawler to which he referred, from whom it had been proposed to purchase the trawlers, how many it was proposed to purchase, and at what cost; and, further, if he will furnish full details of proposals at present under consideration in this regard.

The provision of middle water trawlers arises for consideration as a means of expanding fish exports. As an indication of the scope for expansion, I might mention that the value of herrings exported rose from £65,000 in 1956 to £158,000 in 1957. The development of exports is, however, a complex matter involving elaborate market and technical research. Accordingly, some time must necessarily elapse before decisions can be reached and proposals formulated in regard to trawlers.
