A proposal to amend the law so as to accord the Dáil franchise to members of the Garda Síochána is under examination in connection with proposed legislation to amend the Electoral Acts with a view to their consolidation. It is not possible at this stage to say when the legislation will be introduced.
Can we hope to have the legislation passed before the next general election, so that the Guards can cast their votes?
We have lots of time to do that.
Let us hope the Minister will do it in time, in case anything should happen.
