Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Road Repair Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will allocate a grant to Cork County Council for the repair of roads which are deemed to be of general public utility, as the county council would then be in a better position to take over, and maintain, such roads.

I am not prepared to consider the allocation of grants for the purposes contemplated in the question from the moneys which may be placed at my disposal for allocation towards the cost of improving roads already under the control of county councils. I would remind the Deputy that this matter was discussed with a deputation, which included the Deputy, from Cork County Council to the Minister for Local Government and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance in May, 1957. I have nothing further to add to the views expressed by my predecessor on that occasion.
