Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nelson Monument.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is prepared to accede to the request of Dublin City Council, and other local and national bodies, that legislation be introduced to allow Dublin Corporation to remove the Nelson monument in part, or in whole, as they think fit.

I consider that a legislative proposal of the nature envisaged in the question would more appropriately be promoted by the Dublin City Council than by me.

The city council claim that they have no power. They have requested the trustees to give that power and the trustees have refused and therefore it is up to the Minister to make a decision. I am asking the Minister would that be correct?

The answer from the Minister would be that it is incorrect and that the corporation have power to promote local or personal Bills at the expense of the rates.

In the event of Nelson being removed, does the Minister not consider that it would be a very suitable place to put the Minister for Lands?

I was considering the Deputy.

The Deputy should be put there.

No, the Minister for Lands.
