asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of new works to be completed for the Department of Posts and Telegraphs why portion of the cost is charged to sub-head B, Vote 9, and why other portions are charged to (1) Vote 55 and (2) Telephone Capital Account; and if he will further state in respect of each such item on the details circulated the proportions of the total estimated cost chargeable to each such three accounts.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Posts and Telegraphs—Charging of New Works.
In accordance with the Telephone Capital Acts, capital expenditure incurred on the development of the telephone service is chargeable to the Telephone Capital Account. The Post Office Engineering Branch carry out works of an engineering nature such as heating, lighting, ventilation, and mechanical services required in buildings used by the Department of Posts and Telegraphs. The appropriate portion of expenditure on such works is charged to the Telephone Capital Account and the remainder is borne on Vote 55. The Commissioners of Public Works carry out all the building work required and in the case of a building used jointly for telephone services and other purposes, the expenditure is apportioned accordingly between Vote 9 and the Telephone Capital Account.
As the information asked for in the latter part of the Deputy's question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of An Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated in the Official Report.
Following is the Statement:—

Could the Parliamentary Secretary tell me whether, in relation to the cost of heating, lighting, and so on, any part of the capital cost is borne on the Vote? I appreciate that the maintenance cost must be so borne, but is any part of the capital cost borne on the Vote?
I do not think I could give that information off the reel.
Perhaps the Parliamentary Secretary would ask his private secretary to write to me on the point?
I shall do that.
