Vol. 167 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Numbers of Pupils to Classes.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the highest number of pupils to a class in the Dublin County Borough and the name of the school in which this class is held, and (b) the number of schools in the Dublin County Borough in which there are 50 pupils or over in a class.

In reply to a previous question addressed to me on the 20th March, 1958, I informed the Deputy as to the position in relation to the supplying of information such as that now being sought. I have nothing to add to that reply.

Would the Minister not agree that it is very important for the Minister to know whether there is gross overcrowding in fact in schools in the City and County of Dublin and that it is very remiss of his Department not to know whether or not this overcrowding exists?

I understand that the Department has already been informed of the average number in these schools. I further understand that the information that the Deputy requires would entail getting answers to individual questionnaires from approximately 240 managers in the different schools involved and that these would then have to be analysed. I also understand that the Minister proposes to deal with this problem generally in his speech on his Estimate when it comes before the House.
