Vol. 171 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Displaced Temporary Dispensary Doctors in Dublin.

10.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the public dissatisfaction regarding the recently displaced temporary dispensary doctors in Dublin dispensaries, who had many years' service, he will recommend the Local Appointments Commission to exercise their powers under Section 6 of the Local Authorities (Officers and Employees) Act, 1926, by recommending more than one name for each appointment to be filled and thereby enable the local health authority to choose from the names submitted.

I understand that the power mentioned in the section to recommend more than one candidate following a competition for a post has not been exercised since 1934. The practice, which operated for a period, was abandoned because of the unnecessary delays and difficulties to which it gave rise.

In these circumstances, I would not feel justified in recommending to the commissioners that they should invoke the power on this occasion.
