Vol. 172 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Loans Fund Issues.

22.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will give the breakdown as between local authorities of the figures of £2,900,000 and £6,750,000 which have been published as representing the issues under the Local Loans Fund Acts for the respective periods 1st April, 1958, to 3rd January, 1959, and 1st April, 1957, to 4th January, 1958.

The figures mentioned by the Deputy refer to global issues from the Exchequer to the Local Loans Fund which, together with the fund's other resources, were utilised to make issues to local authorities and for other purposes. They do not refer to issues from the Local Loans Fund which amounted to £4,739,000 for the period 1st April to 31st December, 1958, and to £8,608,000 for the period 1st April to 31st December, 1957. The decline is due mainly to reduced borrowing by housing authorities. As there are some 125 borrowing authorities (including corporations, county councils, urban district councils, harbour commissioners, public assistance authorities, etc.) and issues are made under different heads, it would not be possible without very considerable expenditure of time and labour to extract separate figures of issues to the different local bodies and I hope the Deputy will not press for these details.
