Vol. 172 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retirement of Garda Officers: I.R.A. Service Concession.

27.

asked the Minister for Justice if superintendents and chief superintendents of the Garda Síochána are allowed two years' extra service beyond the normal age for retirement when they possess an I.R.A. Medal with a Bar; and, if so, if he will consider extending this concession to inspectors, station sergeants, sergeants and Gardaí.

The compulsory retiring age of chief superintendents and superintendents has been extended from 63 to 65 years in the case of those of them with a military service certificate, a 1916 Medal or a 1917-21 Medal with Bar and, in addition, the compulsory retiring age of all members of the force below the rank of superintendent who joined before 1952 has been raised to 63 years.

In my opinion it would not be in the public interest or in the best interest of the force itself to extend the retiring ages further.
