Vol. 173 No. 2

Committee on Finance. - Vote 68—Repayments to Contingency Fund.

I move:—

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £5,922 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1959, for the repayment to the Contingency Fund of certain Miscellaneous Advances.

The purpose of this Vote is to provide for repayments to the Contingency Fund to the end of the financial year and to repay any sums issued from it since it was last replenished. It provides the means by which urgent or unforeseen expenditure, not covered by ordinary Votes, may be met, or where it is impracticable at any time to seek the authority of the Dáil for a certain type of expenditure. No payment is charged finally against the fund. Every year, it is restored to its original figure of £20,000, and this Supplementary Estimate is for the purpose of restoring it. As a matter of fact, the face of the Estimate shows the money spent from the fund during the year.

The only significant thing in that is we have more triplets and centenarians than we ever had before. Is that a good sign?

To have more centenarians is a good sign.

Yes, and more triplets?

I shall not pass any comment on that.

Vote put and agreed to.
