Vol. 173 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilmainham Jail.

16.

asked the Minister for Finance if any steps have been taken to convert Kilmainham Jail into a national museum in view of its historic associations; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

The question of the treatment of Kilmainham Jail is at present under active consideration. A statement in the matter will be made as soon as practicable.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say in whose custody at the moment is Kilmainham Jail? Is it in the custody of the Department of Justice or the Board of Works?

The Board of Works, I think, are the authority responsible for its maintenance.

And if anyone wants to visit the jail for any historical reason, is it to the Board of Works he should apply for permission?

Yes, but I might point out that the commissioners are loath to give such permission because of the dangerous condition of the roof of the main building.
