Vol. 174 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions (Resumed). - Construction of Mayo Road.

18.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission will construct a road from Drunganagh to Lisaniska in connection with the Fitzgerald Estate, County Mayo; and why this work has not already been carried out in connection with the rearrangement of the area.

Following rearrangement of holdings in this district about four years ago, proposals for the construction of a road were put forward by the Land Commission. The necessary agreement on the part of the tenants whose lands would be traversed by the proposed roadway was not forthcoming and the proposal had to be abandoned. The holdings in question have since been vested and the Land Commission do not now propose to take any further action in the matter.

Could the Minister say if a sum of money was sanctioned at the time, in the budget estimate, for rearrangement of that particular townland, to include the making of the road?

The Land Commission decided to reconstruct the road in any event, so a sum of money must have been put aside for the purpose. No agreement was forthcoming from the tenants.

Would the Minister ask the Land Commission to make another effort? I think the failure to get consents, which occurred at that time, would not occur now. The Minister might ask the Land Commission to make another attempt at this project.

It does not come within the ambit of Land Commission operations once the land is vested. I doubt whether any further action can be taken. I shall see what can be done.

It is usually done in a case like that.
