Vol. 174 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Crime in Cork City.

3.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that the growing incidence of violence, robbery, intimidation, hooliganism, and destruction of property in Cork city is a cause of serious concern to the citizens; and, if so, whether the Garda force in the area is adequate to deal with the matter; and what steps he proposes to take to ensure that the large newly built-up areas where there are no Garda stations will be properly supervised.

I am informed by the Commissioner, Garda Síochána, that the strength of the Force in Cork City is adequate and that the percentage of crime detections is high. The provision of wireless patrol cars, which is being arranged, is expected to be a further help in the prevention of crime in the area.

Could the Minister say how many Gardaí police this area at night?

I could not say that, off-hand.

Could the Minister say when the patrol cars will be introduced?

They are on order.

A matter of weeks, I suppose?

It might be longer than that, but they are actually on order.
