Vol. 174 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - District Court Clerks.

4.

asked the Minister for Justice what are the functions and duties of a district court clerk; and what are the usual conditions of employment and the scale of remuneration which apply to such persons.

District court clerks are required to perform such duties and to discharge such functions as may be prescribed from time to time by Statute or Rule of Court. Their duties are closely connected with the working of the District Court and consist mainly of the preparation of summonses and warrants, entry of cases for hearing, the issue of decrees and licences, etc. They also act as clerk to the District Justice during sittings of the Court.

The conditions of service applying to the post of district court clerk are such as may be prescribed by the Minister for Finance from time to time. The usual age of retirement is so applied, namely, sixty-five years, and the posts are pensionable provided they are whole-time and the holder has a certificate of qualification from the Civil Service Commissioners. The usual sick and annual leave regulations are also applied except in the case of part-time and unestablished officers.

The salary scales applying to the various classes of district court clerk are set out in the Appendix to the Estimate of the Vote for the District Court, to which I refer the Deputy.
