Vol. 174 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Schools Closed.

11.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number and names of national schools which were closed through lack of pupils in each county since 1940.

Rule 31 of the Rules and Regulations for National Schools requires that aid shall not be continued to a school if the average attendance falls below seven units for two consecutive years. The number of national schools, by county, from which aid was withdrawn since 1940 because of the operation of Rule 31 was as follows:—

Cavan, 3; Donegal, 7; Monaghan, 4; Clare, 2; Cork, 7; Kerry, 3; Tipperary, 3; Kilkenny, 3; Longford, 1; Louth, 1; Meath, 1; Offaly, 1; Wexford, 2; Wicklow, 3; Galway, 3; Leitrim, 9; Mayo, 2; Sligo, 2. Total 57.

In relation to information of this nature it is not the practice to give the names of the schools concerned.
