asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that in some post offices in Limerick posters inviting the public to invest in a firm of stamp auctioneers were on display; and, if so, whether such display was in accordance with Post Office regulations.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Posters in Limerick Post Offices.
I understand that the advertisement referred to has been displayed in some premises where Sub-Post Offices are conducted. This does not contravene any departmental regulation.
Sub-Postmasters are in the nature of contractors to the Department. They are permitted to engage in all but a few types of private business and, as the Deputy is no doubt aware, the same premises are generally used by them for both their private business and the Sub-Post Office. The advertisement in question was displayed by arrangement between the Sub-Postmasters concerned and a commercial advertising firm which has an agreement with the Sub-Postmasters' representative body relating to the display of advertisements in the premises where Sub-Post Offices are conducted.
