Vol. 176 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Applications by British Libraries for Irish Books.

18.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that British libraries which obtain free copies of the books of Irish publishers have recently refused to make their applications in Irish; and if he will take steps to ensure that these libraries should apply in future in the Irish language.

I have been informed that the British libraries entitled to free copies of books under subsection 2 of Section 178 of the Industrial and Commercial Property (Protection) Act, 1927, have been requested by a publisher to make their demands in the Irish language, and that demands have continued to be made in English.

The manner in which libraries should make demand for copies of books is laid down in the Section and would be a matter for interpretation by the Courts in the event of its being brought before them. I have no power to prescribe the manner.
