Vol. 177 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Earl of Cork Scholarships.

59.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the last three years the numbers of students, boys and girls, from Cork county and city who competed for the Earl of Cork scholarships which are awarded annually on the results of the Intermediate Certificate examination.

The terms of the Earl of Cork Scholarships Scheme provide that only when there is not a sufficient number of qualified candidates from the "Lismore District" (i.e., the county of Waterford, including the County Borough of Waterford) as competitors for the scholarships, may candidates from the Extended District (which includes the East Riding of County Cork and the County Borough of Cork) be regarded as eligible to compete. In each of the years 1957, 1958 and 1959 a sufficient number of qualified candidates from the "Lismore District" competed for the scholarships and accordingly no candidate from Cork county or city could be regarded as eligible to compete.
