Vol. 177 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Glenamoy Peatlands Station: Special Road Grant.

43.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he can give consideration to the making of a special road grant for the road leading from the peatlands station at Glenamoy into Pullatomas village.

I regret that it is not possible to allocate a further Road Fund grant to Mayo County Council in the present year. It is open to the council to consider dealing with the roads in question under the grants already available to them.

If given evidence of the very poor condition of this road and the insistence of the people and the station authorities that it should be repaired, would the Minister use his good offices to see that a certain allocation may be made towards it from whatever grant he makes to the local authority?

Of course, the matter of the distribution and the break-up of the moneys under the various grants that are allocated through my Department to the local authority is initially a matter for the local authority. In general, I think it is quite clear that the local authority members together with the officials are in a pretty good position to be very good judges of where the greatest need arises at any given time. However, if these questions come up, they will receive full consideration in my Department.
