Vol. 178 No. 7

Order of Business.

Business will be taken in the following order, Nos. 1, 2, 3, 12, 13, 14, 7, 8, 9 and 15. Private Members' Business will be taken at 9 o'clock.

I should perhaps inform the House that it is proposed to adjourn on concluding the business of this session to February 10th. In that regard, I may mention for information that I had hoped to have the Bill for the establishment of an authority to operate television and broadcasting services before the House this session, but that did not prove to be possible. The intention now is to proceed by way of introducing it in the Seanad so that it will, I hope, be available to the Dáil when the Dáil re-assembles on February 10th.

It is, I understand, desired by the main Opposition Party to have an adjournment debate of 12 hours before the termination of the session. That will be arranged on tomorrow and Friday. It may mean in certain circumstances a motion to sit later than 10.30 p.m. tomorrow, but the intention will be to conclude the debate by 5 p.m. on Friday. When the progress of business today has been ascertained, a motion will be prepared for the Dáil tomorrow to facilitate that arrangement.

The Whips can meet later tonight.

Will the Road Traffic Bill be circulated before the end of the year?

In view of the importance of the legislation dealing with television, will the Taoiseach consider giving a First Reading before the House adjourns and then taking the Bill when the House resumes in February?

The intention is to introduce the Bill in the Seanad and take it through the Seanad before bringing it to the Dáil. That will ensure that the Bill can be proceeding in January during which the Seanad will be meeting and the Dáil will not. The Bill should be ready for the Dáil when it re-assembles on the 10th February having been already passed by the other House.

On what date is it intended to introduce it in the Seanad?

Next week. I should hope it will be available for the Seanad by the first week in January.

Could the Leas-Cheann Comhairle please tell us what period of time is still left for the Private Deputies' Motion?

The time remaining for the debate on the Local Authorities (Works) Act is two hours and forty minutes.

That is the one about which a resolution was passed at the Ard Fheis.

Deputy Kitt is going to intervene.
