Vol. 178 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Eligibility for Appointment of National Teacher.

100.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state if a national teacher (name supplied) is eligible for appointment at present; and, if not, why; and whether this teacher is qualified or will qualify for pension.

In view of the age of the person concerned and of the fact that he has not served in a national school since 1935 he is not now eligible for recognition in any capacity in a national school. He does not qualify for the award of a pension under the National School Teachers' Superannuation Schemes.

Do I understand the Minister to say he has passed the age at which he could be re-employed?

Why does he not qualify for a pension on his former service?

The rules in question require that on retirement a person will have reached the age of 60 or have at least 35 years' service.

If he had not 35 years' service, he does not qualify?

Or reached the age of 60 with 10 years' service.

I think I am correct in stating he had 10 years' service.

If he has 10 years' pensionable service, has reached the age of 60 and then retires, he would be eligible for a pension.
