Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Rates.

63.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the great uneasiness of the ratepayers of Meath at the ever increasing rate demand, and of the large amount of rates that go to service the local council's debt of two million and thirty-five thousand pounds; and whether in view of this grave situation he will ensure that no further schemes, unless of great national value, are sanctioned so that the council will be forced to live within its means.

I am not aware that the position is as represented by the Deputy in the first part of the question. In regard to the second part of the question the Deputy may rest assured that, in common with those of all other local authorities, the schemes of the Meath County Council requiring my sanction will on submission continue to receive careful scrutiny before a decision on them is given.
