Vol. 179 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Register of Voters.

64.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the names of persons previously on the Register of Voters for Dáil Elections have been removed from the Register because of their British nationality or citizenship; and if he will state the requirements for inclusion in the Register.

I am not aware that the names of persons have been removed from the register of Dáil electors because of their British nationality. The register in each area is compiled by the county registrar for the area and every citizen of Ireland who on 15th September in each year has attained the age of 21 years and who is not disqualified by law is entitled to be registered as a Dáil elector in the constituency in which he was on 15th September ordinarily resident or in occupation of business premises as defined in the Electoral Act, 1923. It is clear, therefore, that if the name of a person is removed from the register it would not be because of his British nationality but because of his not being a citizen of Ireland. If he is a citizen of Ireland as well as being a British national he is entitled to have his name on the register if he is otherwise qualified.

Is the Minister aware that the practice followed by different returning officers is different?

I do not differ from the Deputy.
