Vol. 179 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Employment in Galway.

9.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the numbers employed in the building industry in Galway City for the years 1950-1955 and 1955-1960.

It is not possible to obtain adequate statistics of employment in the building industry for small areas except from the periodic censuses of population. The last census at which particulars of occupation were obtained was that of 1951 and at that time the number of males classified as Workers in Building and Contracting, Painters and Decorators, living in Galway Urban District was 799.

With certain exceptions manual workers 16 years of age and over in the building industry are compulsorily insured against interruption of employment due to bad weather. The number of supplementary Insurance Books exchanged by such persons at the Galway Local Office of the Department of Social Welfare for the insurance years covering the period in question may be taken as giving some indication of the level of employment in the building industry in Galway and its vicinity. I propose, with the permission of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report, a statement containing this information.

Following is the statement:

*Supplementary Insurance was extended, from May, 1955, to include certain specified employment in Civil Engineering and in the Painting Trade.

I require only the figures for 1950, 1955 and 1960, but, from the wording of this, it would appear I wanted ten figures. Possibly the Taoiseach could give me the figures I require?

The Deputy will get the ten figures and they will include the figures he requires.

Question No. 10 postponed.
