Vol. 182 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Resigned and Dismissed R.I.C.: Abatement of Pensions.

14.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the dissatisfaction which exists amongst resigned and dismissed R.I.C. members by reason of the fact that their pensions were abated where they accepted State employment; and whether he is prepared to take such steps as may be necessary to cancel this abatement.

It is mandatory, under the various legislative provisions governing the superannuation of civil servants, Gardaí and other State employees, to abate or suspend pension in respect of post retirement earnings drawn from the Exchequer. Accordingly, it would not be appropriate to make any alteration in the provisions for the suspension or abatement of pensions granted to the resigned and dismissed members of the Royal Irish Constabulary where the pensioners are re-employed in the public service.
