Vol. 182 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Servants: Extension of Service.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance the circumstances under which an extension of service over the age of sixty-five years may be granted to an established and pensionable employee of a State Department.

Extension of service over the age of sixty-five years may be granted to an established civil servant whose normal retiring age is sixty-five years on grounds of public interest, hardship or national service or for a short period not exceeding three months to enable the civil servant to obtain improved superannuation benefits. The extension of service is in all cases subject to appropriate employment being available and to the officer's health, conduct and efficiency being satisfactory.

Does the Minister appreciate that in some cases where these extensions are given, it means that promotion is withheld from civil servants who deserve it and have looked forward to it for many years?

That may happen all right.
