Vol. 182 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishment of Industries.

29.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the number of industries established in the past three years with financial assistance from the State or from semi-State organisations in (1) the underdeveloped areas and (2) the rest of the country.

The number of industries established in the past three years with financial assistance from State or from semi-State organisations were

(i) 30 in the undeveloped areas and

(ii) 24 in the rest of the country.

Can the Minister indicate how many of those have since been closed down?

None that I know of. I shall be glad if the Deputy could give me the name of one established in the last three years that has closed down.

Portumna.

Established in the last three years—that is what is in the question?

I can give you a few.

What about the way you closed the one in Newbridge by setting up another one in Belturbet?

Droichead Nua.

That factory was closed down without the knowledge of my Department and without any action by my Department.

It was closed because you transferred the people to Belturbet.

I transferred nobody anywhere.

The people were transferred to Belturbet and the Minister was responsible for it.

The Minister was not responsible for it.

He was; he went up there and opened it with a great smile on his face.

That was a post factum operation.

I doubt if the people who lost their jobs at Newbridge would be concerned whether or not it was a post factum operation.
