Vol. 182 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Skilled Tradesmen in Building Industry.

30.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a serious position is arising in the building industry owing to the scarcity of skilled tradesmen and that works of a substantial nature may be delayed or seriously retarded as a result: and if he will initiate measures whereby the names and addresses of such workers might be available through the appropriate unions to prospective employers.

I have had no indication of a widespread scarcity of skilled tradesmen in the building industry though there may be temporary difficulties in some areas due to fluctuations in the volume of building activity. The present development work at Shannon has, I understand, led to heavy demands on local labour and consequently caused a local shortage of skilled labour. This is a normal consequence of an increase in building activity in a particular area which requires a period of adjustment to be resolved. It is a fundamental objective of a trade union to foster the full employment of its members, and it can be assumed that it takes all steps necessary to advise prospective employers of the availability of workers. I do not see that any intervention is required on my part.
