Vol. 182 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Togher (Cork) Schools.

55.

asked the Minister for Education what is the present position in regard to the erection of the proposed new national school for girls at Togher, County Cork.

56.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the very serious overcrowding which exists in the boys' and girls' national schools at Togher, Cork, and that the attendance is approximately double that for which the schools were intended; whether his Department and the Office of Public Works have approved of plans for the erection of a new school; and, if so, when he expects that the new school will be constructed.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 55 and 56 together.

I am aware of the overcrowding which exists in the boys' and girls' national schools at Togher.

My Department has sanctioned a grant towards the cost of erecting a new girls' school which will provide accommodation for 136 pupils. I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that preparation of detailed working drawings and a specification is now being put in hands. When the new school is erected the present school building will be reserved for boys.

I am unable to say at present when the work of erecting the new school will commence, but every effort will be made to expedite the case.
