Vol. 182 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Visit of Attorney General to Strasbourg.

1.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Taoiseach whether the Attorney General went to Strasbourg last month; and, if so, what was the purpose, the duration and the cost of his trip.

On Sunday, 29th May, the Attorney General left Ireland for the purpose of attending a preliminary meeting in Strasbourg on Tuesday, 31st May, with the President of the Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights, to which an application involving the Government of Ireland had been referred, and with delegates from the Commission of Human Rights. The arrival of the President of the Chamber was delayed by a strike on the French railways and the meeting did not take place until Wednesday, 1st June. The Attorney General arrived back in Dublin on Thursday, 2nd June.

The cost of the trip was approximately £60.

Was it necessary for the Attorney General himself to go there?

I think so.
