Vol. 184 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax Statistics.

15.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of each of the last two financial years (1) the total amounts in (a) income tax under schedules A, B, C, D and E, (b) sur-tax and (c) corporation profits tax, (2) the number of taxpayers (persons, firms or companies as the case may be) who have contributed to each amount of tax collected, and (3) the amount of arrears of tax outstanding under each of the headings specified at the end of each of the financial years in question.

Some of the information requested by the Deputy is not yet available in respect of the financial year 1959/60. The figures for the two latest years for which information on the lines asked for by the Deputy is available are contained in a statement which, with the permission of the Leas-Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report.

The bulk of the tax shown as outstanding represents protective assessments and cases under appeal or inquiry. The tax assessed remains as tax outstanding until the amount is either paid or discharged or written-off as irrecoverable. Of the total of £13,219,826 outstanding at the 1st June, 1960, on foot of Income Tax, Sur-tax and Corporation Profits Tax it is estimated that only £3,500,000 will eventually be established to be payable.

*Note: Particulars of Income Tax outstanding are compiled as at the 1st June each year, and the corresponding dates for Income Tax outstanding are, therefore 1st June, 1959 and 1st June, 1960, respectively.
