Vol. 185 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation of Maize.

33.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if it is the policy of the Government to allow the free importation of maize.

It is not the policy of the Government to allow the free importation of maize.

May I inquire of the Minister in connection with his answers to these two questions, is it not eminently possible to reduce non-millable wheat to the equivalent of wheat offals commonly known as white pollard?

That is a technical question but those who are in that trade will tell you, first of all, that there is the element of cost and, even if wheat were available at the same price as wheat offals, it stills has to be milled and if used in their mixture contains too much flour for their purpose.

Has the Minister considered requiring millers to take off, say, 30 per cent. of the flour and leave what we used to call white pollard and make that available to compounders at the same price as imported offals are at present available?

And use the flour for what?

For bread. Surely you have not swallowed the millers' gag that they cannot use it?

That is being done.

They could easily incorporate 30 per cent. extraction flour in the grist.
