Vol. 187 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Temporary and Permanent Civil Servants.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance the total number of civil servants, permanent and temporary, on 31st March in each of the years 1957-1961.

The available statistics are set out in a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Total number of Civil Servants

1st January,

1957

30,723

1958

30,285

1959

28,039

1960

28,108

The figures are taken from the Civil Service Census, which relates to the first working day of the calendar year. The figure for the 2nd January, 1961, is not yet available. The 1957 and 1958 figures included classes—mainly scale payment sub-postmasters, branch managers of employment exchanges and part time employees earning less than £50 a year and not paid by the hour—whose estimated total number is 2,700 at most and who are excluded from the figures for later years.
