Vol. 187 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing in South Tipperary.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the very bad housing conditions of certain people in Tipperary South Riding, who made application for rehousing six or seven years ago; that although the applications have been passed by the local authority and sites purchased there appears to be an undue delay in having the houses erected; and that the housing conditions of the applicants are rapidly worsening, as, in expectation of rehousing, they did not carry out repairs to their present accommodation; and if he will state the reasons for the delay, and take immediate steps to ensure that the houses are advertised for contract.

In the past twelve months, I have sanctioned the acceptance by the housing authority of tenders for 38 cottages. I understand that the erection of 30 of these cottages has not yet commenced in cases where the housing authority is satisfying itself as to the needs of applicants or where difficulties have been experienced in getting contractors to provide satisfactory security for the due performance of the contracts. There are at present 24 cottages in course of erection by the Council and it is proposed to invite tenders shortly for a further 35 cottages.
