Vol. 187 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imports of Polish Toys

12.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is on order for this country a large number of toys for import from Communist Poland within the coming months; and if he will make a statement dealing with the effect of such imports upon Irish home or cottage and other small industries and the effect of such imports to this country upon trade with Britain.

I have no knowledge of the transaction referred to by the Deputy. The home market for the range of toys produced here is protected by customs duties. Where required under the Anglo-Irish Trade Agreements a margin of preference is provided for British manufactured articles.

Is the Minister aware that the toys on the market at Christmas were all junk and hardly worked after one hour's use? Is there any guarantee that these imports will be any better than those available last Christmas in Dublin?

I am not so aware.
