Vol. 187 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Aviation Radio Officers.

11.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is aware that the minimum salary of established aviation radio officers in the Shannon area is £450 per annum and the maximum is £755, and that the minimum salary for a comparable post in the British Air Ministry is £830; and if in view of the inadequacy of the salary and of the incentive to emigrate offered by higher salaries in England and elsewhere he will consider raising the salaries of these officers.

A claim for revision of the salary scales of established Aviation Radio Officers has been made under the scheme of Conciliation and Arbitration for the Civil Service and is under consideration.

The scales for this grade were fixed as a result of Arbitration in 1954 and since then the general cost of living increases have been granted.

The present inclusive scales are:—

Single Men : £455 × 16—£503 × 18 —£625

Married Men: £455 × 23 : 10—£755

I understand that the salary for the corresponding grade in Britain at the age of 21, which is the minimum age of entry for officers in this country, is £660 10s.
