Vol. 187 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pensions Recipients.

3.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of persons in receipt of (a) old age pensions, (b) widows' pensions and (c) orphans' pensions.

As the Deputy is aware, there are now two types of old age pension, the non-contributory pension and the new contributory old age pension which came into operation from the 6th January, 1961. The introduction of the latter pension has affected, and is still affecting, the total numbers in receipt of non-contributory old age pension and of widow's pension, so that the numbers change from day to day. It is not possible, therefore, to give exact figures, as statistics are not compiled on a daily basis.

The figures required by the Deputy have been estimated as follows:

Non-contributory old age pensions

130,700

Contributory old age pensions

26,500

Non-contributory Widows' pensions

24,000

Contributory Widows' pensions

32,600

Non-contributory Orphans' pensions

200

Contributory Orphans' pensions

300
