Note 1. The grants at (a) and (g) represent 40% recoupment of approved provisions by the local authorities concerned for main road upkeep. The figures marked with an asterisk are provisional.

Note 2. The grants at (b) and (c) are allocated on a mileage basis. In a number of cases transfers as between the two classes of grants were effected in accordance with general conditions laid down by the Department, during the course of the year.

Note 3. The grants at (d) are confined to counties in the Gaeltacht and congested areas in accordance with an eight year programme initiated in 1953-54.

Note 4. The grants at (e) are made available for selected works on main roads, such as the replacement of dangerous bridges, which cannot be dealt with under the main road improvement grant (b). In addition to the allocations listed, there are provisional commitments in respect of certain bridges where increases in cost, etc. are likely to arise.

Note 5. The grants at (f) arose following the passing of the Road Fund (Grants and Advances) (Temporary Provisions) Act, 1959, and are given to certain road authorities to enable them to deal with the road problems created by railway closing and the establishment of major industrial undertakings.

Note 6. The grants at (h) totalling £150,000 are determined having regard to the relative needs of each area and are similar to previous years' allocations.

Note 7. The urban road improvement grant (i) was introduced for the first time in 1960/61. The distribution of the £50,000 is related to the mileage of urban roads in each town.
