Vol. 188 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Subpostmasters.

42.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of subpostmasters who are in receipt of salaries of (a) £100 or less per annum, (b) £150 or less per annum, (c) £250 or less per annum, (d) £300 or less per annum, (e) £350 or less per annum and (f) £400 or less per annum.

The reply to the Deputy's question is (a) 7, (b) 454, (c) 1,048, (d) 1,197, (e) 1,315 and (f) 1,443.

Do I understand the Minister to say that seven subpostmasters are required to give daily and hourly service at a subpostoffice, to provide premises, heat, light and an assistant on a yearly salary of less than £100?

And each of them offered to do that.

Never mind what they offered to do. Necessity knows no law, if they are driven to it.

Why did the Deputy not do something about it when he had the chance?

If he had had time, he would.

The people saw to that.

Is it not a fact that in the great majority of cases these subpostmasters have another business and this is only a sideline to attract customers?

That is correct.

That has nothing to do with it.
